Early records of the city and county of Albany, and colony of Rensselaerswyck, [Volume 1,] Translated from the original Dutch by Jonathan Pearson, 1869 528p.
Full view v.1 (original from University of Michigan)

The University of Michigan copy at HathiTrust is missing its title page and pages i-iii, beginning with the preface at page iv, with page v of the preface also missing with an obvious interruption in the text. The full catalogue entry correctly states "Vol. 1 has imprint: Albany, N.Y., J. Munsell, 1869," although it is unclear where that information comes from if this copy lacked a title page, although the catalogue entry continues, "Vol. 1 published also in Collections on the history of Albany, edited by J. Munsell, v. 3-4, 1870-71." A copy of volume 3 is available at archive.org, and a transcript here, highlights the missing material (herein part of "Introduction to Albany County Records," as well as a Table of Contents.)

The archive.org copy of "Early Records, 1869" (implying Volume I,) found at the web address http://www.archive.org/details/earlyrecordsofci01alba, scanned by "The Sloan Foundation" from a copy at the Library of Congress, is actually a copy of Volume II, which is also found at http://www.archive.org/details/earlyrecordsofci02alba, scanned by "MSN" from a copy at the New York Public Library, both wrongly dated as 1869, instead of 1916. http://www.archive.org/details/earlyrecordsofci03alba is correctly Volume 3, scanned by The Sloan Foundation from a copy at the Library of Congress. There is no page for "earlyrecordsofci04alba," but there is one for the variant web address of http://www.archive.org/details/earlyrecordsofc04alba, which is a copy of Volume 4 scanned by the University of Toronto from their own copy. The catalogue heading reads 1916, instead of 1919----the correct date of publication for volume 4. The catalogue description reads:

"Vols. 2- revised and edited by A.J.F. Van Laer, Vol 1 published also in Collections on the history of Albany, edited by J. Munsell, v. 3-4, 1870-71, v. 1. [Deeds] 1656-1675 [i.e. 1679]- v. 2. Deeds. 1678-1704.- v. 3. Notarial papers 1 and 2. 1660-1696.- v. 4. Mortgages I, 1658-1660, and wills 1-2, 1681-1765, 52"
although that information, erroneous as it is in reference to Volume 4, is found nowhere within the text.

The 1869 volume was the precursor of three additional volumes under the same title, translated by Pearson, but "revised and edited" by van Laer, and not published until 1916-1919. (See chronological list below.)

Page 3 of Volume 2 explains somewhat the belated continuation of the Pearson translations:

New York State Library
Albany, N. Y.
Hon. John H. Finley
President of the University
DEAR SIR: I have the honor to transmit herewith and to recommend for publication the first volume of Professor Jonathan Pearson's translation of those early Dutch records of Albany, the editing and publishing of which was authorized by vote of the Board of Regents, June 25, 1914. This editing has been carefully done with constant reference to the original records by Mr A. J. F. van Laer, Archivist in the State Library. The present work follows in immediate chronologic sequence Professor Pearson's volume of nearly fifty years ago and his own earlier title has been continued for the present series. In the editor's introduction, details appear as to contents of the present instalment with interesting comment on the significance of the material as a fruitful source for the social, personal and political history of colonial New York. The deeds, mortgages and wills when thus translated and carefully edited are also of high practical value in connection with local real estate titles and litigation.
Very truly yours
J. I. WYER, JR
Director
UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Approved for publication this 21st day of May, 1915
President of the University

This work consists of brief notices of the first settlers of the colony of Rensselaerswyck (in the neighborhood of Albany, New York, then New Netherland). A paragraph, varying in length from a few sentences to half a page, is devoted to each settler, giving a concise record of his arrival in the colony and his occupation, together with other essential data such as names of wife and children, dates of marriage and death, and references to land grants, leases, agreements, etc. This information is based on ledger accounts, court proceedings, resolutions of the Commissioners of the Colony, deeds, contracts, powers of attorney, and the account books of Jeremias van Rensselaer.)
