Filipino Reporter; "Abu Sayyaf"

March 3, 1994, Filipino Reporter, Muslim extremists linked to blast attack by Edmund M. Silvestre, 365 words
COTABATO CITY -- Muslim extremists may have been involved in a grenade attack on carnival revelers in Sultan Kudarat that killed 11 people and wounded 24, police said Sunday.

Police director Akmad Mamalinta said investigators were questioning a man in connection with the Friday bombing of the funfair in nearby Isulan town but he refused to say if the suspect had admitted any involvement.

"This could be the handiwork of the Abu Sayyaf," Mamalinta, told reporters. He was referring to a splinter faction of the mainstream rebel group Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) which is fighting for Muslim self-rule in the south.

Police have linked Abu Sayyaf, composed of young Muslin fundamentalists, to several other bombings in Mindanao in the past year, including a Christmas grenade attack on a Roman Catholic cathedral in Davao City.

Six people died in the Davao blast which was followed by explosions in three mosques in the city, sparking fears of violence between Christians and Muslims.

The carnival was packed with hundreds of people celebrating before the town's religious fiesta when the grenade exploded shortly before 1 a.m.

A police officer tried to pick up the grenade and throw it away but it exploded and killed him.

June 16, 1994, Filipino Reporter, 20 rebels killed in police raid in Sulu, by Reuben Seguritan,
The military today said the third ranking leader of the Abu Sayyaf extremist group was among the 20 rebels killed-by body count-since the launching of full-scale police operation against the group in Patikul, Sulu on June 3.

Second Marine Brigade Commander Col. Ponciano Millena, in a report to Southern Command (Southcom) Chief Maj. Gen. Orlando Soriano, named the dead extremist leader as Hadji Abubakar Jiking.

Jiking, a former commander of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), is the deputy of former MNLF commander Sahiron Radullan.

Both were said to have defected to the Abu Sayyaf extremist group only weeks ago.

Eleven of 20 confirmed killed from the Abu Sayyaf group were identified as Tirih Hamid, Marad Astig, Muin Padjik, Ismag Maulid, Mahang Adjad, Amdit Jurah, Jiry Ibad, Danagan Apud, Ubak Abbig, Mahan Amil and Jiking.

Five soldiers were killed while 12 others were wounded in the initial assault of the main Abu Sayyaf camp at the Patikul hill, a steep lair of the rebels surrounded marshy land.

Col. Millena reported intense fighting in the Patikul-Panamao area, where about 140 men of the Abu Sayyaf group are holding there ground late Saturday (June 4) afternoon.

August 4, 1994, Filipino Reporter, Abu Sayyaf eyed for alien tie, by Edmund M. Silvestre,
National Security Adviser Jose Almonte on Monday said the Philippines will coordinate with international intelligence agencies to find out if the extremist Islamic group Abu Sayyaf has any foreign links on global terrorism.

In a briefing for Malacanang reporters. Almonte said the government will seek the help of the Interpol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and foreign embassies in Manila regarding any information about this fundamentalist group.

The Abu Sayyaf is holding hostage Fr. Cirilo Nacorda in Basilan since June 8. The group has asked for a three-million-peso ransom but the government has stood pat on its policy not to give in to any ransom demand.

Fr. Nacorda is still alive and well even after more than a month of captivity. The priest has grown a beard as shown during his first clandestine interview by Channels 2 and 7 which was aired July 17. The interview was arranged by the remnants of the Abu Sayyaf in their hideout in Basilan.

August 4, 1994, Filipino Reporter, Captured priest not in hands of Moro rebels, says Ramos, by Edmund M. Silvestre, 474 words,
President Fidel V. Ramos has denied reports that kidnapped priest Fr. Cirilo Nacorda was turned over by the extremist Abu Sayyaf group to the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), but was optimistic of a breakthrough in the next few days.

"There have been some reports filtering to media which media picked up in some headlines (on Fr. Nacorda's release) but on my verification from (Defense) Secretary (Renato) de Villa this morning as well as Secretary (Rafael) Alunan, there are no confirmed reports about Fr. Nacorda having been released by the Abu Sayyaf group to any body, not even to the MNLF," the President told a press conference in Malacanang.

August 11, 1994, Filipino Reporter, US priest rescuers praised
Five kidnappers suspected to be members of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf group were killed in a gunbattle with MNFL rebels at a checkpoint in Timbangan, Indanan, Sulu.

Fr. Bertlesman was saying Mass at about 4:50 p.m. when heavily armed men dressed in military uniform snatched the 70-year-old American missionary.
MNLF elements intercepted the kidnappers an hour later and a firefight ensued, killing five of the kidnappers.

Fr. Bertlesman was also wounded in his left arm and left buttock during the shootout.

December 8, 1994, Filipino Reporter, Bids may be opposed, by Edmund M. Silvestre; 332 words,
DAVAO CITY--Insurgency victims can oppose amnesty bids, National Amnesty Commissioner Alfredo Tadiar said Nov. 25.
Persons with slain relatives or properties damaged by insurgents can file "anticipatory opposition" against any of over 1,000 rebels who have opted to accept government's peace offer which expires Nov. 29, he said.
Among those who have applied are rebels of the New People's Army (NPA), Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), and the rightist Rebolusyonaryong Alyansang Makabayan (RAM).

Tadiar said the Abu Sayyaf was a "gray area" needing further study but added the status of the group, tagged by many as terrorist, does not automatically disqualify its members from seeking amnesty.

He said the anticipatory opposition may be filed with any of the 16 Local Amnesty Boards (LABs) found in each of the regional capitals and Kalinga-Apayao province.

It was, however, stressed that the opposition would prevent the granting of amnesty in cases where rebels, including the Abu Sayyaf, have proven that they committed a crime in pursuit of their political beliefs.

December 8, 1994, Filipino Reporter, 8 missing EMs are dead, by Edmund M. Silvestre, 478 words,
MANILA--The military said that the eight army troopers earlier declared missing after they were ambushed by suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf were confirmed dead after their bodies were retrieved by pursuing government troops in upper Kapayawan, Isabela, Basilan.

The report submitted to Gen. Arturo T. Enrile, AFP chief of staff, also said two militiamen who were among the 10 missing troopers were wounded, bringing to seven the number of wounded personnel in the Nov. 26 ambuscade.

Camp Aguinaldo Operations Center identified those killed in the encounter as 1Lt. Winston Valeros, Cpl. Pablito Regala, Pfcs. David Kabon, Eddie Genera, Allan Calubag, Roel de Guzman and militiamen Tahsim Bandang and certain Maningo.

The group belonged to the 44th Infantry Battalion based in Basilan.

Joint operatives of the 44th and 55th Infantry Battalion which conducted pursuit operations against the fleeing Abu Sayyaf members also recovered the two wounded militiamen who were earlier reported missing. They were identified as Asad Habih and Cornelio Francisco.

The military report said five other wounded personnel were earlier retrieved during Saturday's fierce firefight and were brought to a military hospital in Zamboanga City. They were identified as Cpl. Ireneo Galgote, Pfcs. Castro Bagalanon and Abdulsahip Amolan and militiamen Exequiel Gregorio and Arnulfo Saavedra.

Lt. Gen. Orlando Soriano, AFP Southcom chief, flew to Basilan to oversee the ongoing pursuit operations. He said the ambushed troopers were on a patrol mission at the mountainous Upper Kapayawan when strafed by suspected Abu Sayyaf men, numbering about 100.

A firefight lasted for about an hour, the biggest encounter so far that occurred in Basilan since Fr. Cirilo Nacorda was released last August.

The report said that two M-16 rifles, two M-14 rifles, two Garand rifles and one M203 grenade launcher were taken by the Abu Sayyaf terrorists from the slain soldiers. (PNA)

April 13, 1995, Filipino Reporter, 6 Muslim extremists held: Police link them to World Trade Center
Police sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said cassette tapes of the sheiks' sermons were found in the apartment. On Saturday, police arrested a Pakistani businessman, Tariq Rana, who is suspected of having ties to the alleged bombing mastermind, Ramzi Yousef. Police later said he would be charged with investment fraud although they still believed he provided support to a Filipino Muslim extremist group, Abu Sayyaf, which worked with Yousef in Manila and many have helped him escape. Yousef was allegedly involved in January in what police said was a plot to kill Pope John Paul II and blow up U.S. airlines over the Pacific. He eluded arrest in Manila, but was apprehended a month later in Pakistan and deported to the United States. He is awaiting trial in New York in the February 1993 bombing, which killed six people. Officials said the six arrested in Kalookan City were also believed to have ties to Yousef. Pakistan officially charged Yousef with illegally possessing explosives, although it is unlikely that it would seek to have him returned for trial.

April 13, 1995, Filipino Reporter, Sheik calls link 'unfair', by Edmund M. Silvestre, 581 words,
Reports that six alleged terrorists arrested in the Philippines are affiliated with Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman just because they have tapes of some of his preaching are unfair to the Egyptian cleric, his lawyer said in New York.

Lawyer Lynne Stewart said the reports were part of what seems like a weekly ritual of police reports attempting to link her client to terrorism around the globe.

"If there's an earthquake in Pakistan, if a volcano erupts in the Philippines, there's a connection to the sheik," she said with sarcasm. "Every Monday there's a new revelation that supposedly points to his guilt. Meanwhile, in the courtroom there's less and less."

Abdel-Rahman and 10 others are on trial in federal court in Manhattan on charges that they conspired to bomb the Untied Nations, FBI headquarters in Manhattan and two tunnels and a bridge. The blind cleric allegedly led the others in multiple plots.

The latest reports came out of Kalookan City, a suburb of Manila in the Philippines. Police there said six alleged Muslim extremists arrested in a weekend raid have links to the sheik and to Ramzi Yousef, the alleged mastermind of the Feb. 26, 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

But Stewart said the only detail she has heard was that the men had audio tape-recordings of the sheik's speeches.

The lawyer noted that a translator for the government testified in February that he too had tape-recordings of some of the sheik's speeches.

"So I guess we should arrest the translator for the government." she said.

Stewart said the sheik has been linked to all sorts of people he does not know. She said he does not believe it is right to hold him responsible for the actions of everyone who obtains his speeches."

"He basically feels he's public person," she said. "His stuff is not hidden. He preaches."

Police in the Philippines said the six arrested this weekend - two Jordanians, a Lebanese, an Omani, a Syrian and a United Arab Emirates national - were affiliated with the Filipino Muslim extremist group Abu Sayyaf.

The group has been accused of aiding Yousef in a plot to kill Pope John Paul II and blow up American airliners over the Pacific.

Yousef's court-appointed lawyer did not return a phone call for comment. Yousef reportedly eluded arrest in Manila, but was arrested a month later in Pakistan and deported to the Untied States.

He is awaiting trial in the Trade Center bombing that killed six people. Prosecutors say the bombing was carried out by Muslim extremists determined to force the United States to change its policies toward Israel and Egypt.

September 17, 1998; Filipino Reporter, Italian priest, 12 men seized, 472 words,
An Italian Catholic priest and 12 of his parishioners were abducted by some 30 heavily armed men Tuesday night at the outskirts of Barangay Sto. Nio in Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte, hours after a provincial peace and order council meeting in nearby Siocon town. Fr. Luciano Benedetti, 56, of Treviso, and the 12 others were abducted by men believed to be members of the Islamic extremist group Abu Sayyaf, Police Superintendent Ronald Rederos said. At midday, the suspects freed the Filipinos but held on to the Italian, an Army report to Zamboanga del Norte Governor Isagani Amatong said. The names of the Filipinos were not made available. Sibuco Mayor Nerbi Edding reported through radio that Benedetti, a member of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), and the members of the Sto. Nio Multipurpose Cooperative were abducted at 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to Praxedes Rubia, executive secretary to the governor. One of the captives, who was taken as a guide and was not bound like the others, later escaped and reported to the police. Soldiers pursuing the gunmen found the Filipinos abandoned in a village between the towns of Sibuco and Siraway. They were unharmed. No group has claimed responsibility and no ransom demand has been made. The Abu Sayyaf (Bearer of the Sword) has been blamed for several anti-Christian bombings and kidnappings in the south. Among their victims was Spanish priest Bernardo Blanco, who was kidnapped in 1993 but escaped after 48 days in captivity, and two Spanish nuns freed after 19 days without ransom that same year. Two Roman Catholic priests were abducted in the south late last year. Fr. Desmond Hartford of Dublin and Fr. Bernard Maes of Belgium were kidnapped separately by former Muslim separatist rebels in November 1997, but were freed unharmed. Benedetti has been engaged in missionary work in the Philippines for the past 10 years, police said. He was installed as the parish priest of Sibuco last year. Filipino Reporter; August 17, 2000; 575 words, Gemma laughs off link to terror,
"Wow, of course not. Some people are really after my position. They wanted
to get rid of me. How desperate can they get."
Thus, the reaction of Tourism Secretary Gemma Cruz-Araneta to reports
linking her to the international terrorists, the Abu Sayyaf and the Moro
Islamic Liberation Front.
Although Araneta admitted it crossed her mind that she would be linked to
the terrorists and the Muslim rebels after President Joseph Estrada
disclosed during a Cabinet meeting the other day that over 50 government
officials were suspected of aiding Muslim rebels, she vehemently denied she
had anything to do with it.
In an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Araneta said she knew
neither Saudi billionaire Osama Bin Laden nor his brother-in-law Mohammad
Jamal Khalifa.
Neither was she involved in the operations, legitimate or not, of the
International Islamic Relief Organization Inc., she said.
Araneta said she had no reason to go to Mindanao in the 1990s. In fact, the
last time she went to Zamboanga City was in 1968, she said.
She went back to Mindanao only when she became tourism secretary because of
the government's tourism projects, she said.
Araneta said she came back to the Philippines in 1990 but that she
regularly went to Mexico every two months.
If there was anything that could link her to Muslims, she said, it was
merely "sartorial." "It's because I wear malong," she said.
Besides, she said, she was sympathetic to "our Muslim brothers and sisters
and why would they fault me on that."
Araneta said the former Abu Sayyaf member (Anzar) who allegedly saw her in
Davao and Zamboanga cities, could have just pointed to her being a former
Miss Philippines because she was tall.
"Baka naman si Margie Moran yan," she said.
Told that Anzar insisted he could not forget her face, particularly her
eyebrows, Araneta laughed out loud. "Kilala ko na yan pag kilay ko na ang
pinaguusapan," she said.
But Araneta refused to name names as to who was behind what she described
as a "demolition job" against her.
"I have a short list of people who wanted my position so desperately. They
make me appear incompetent and corrupt but none has stuck so far," she
stressed. Demolition job
"It looks so coincidental. See. I really expected that they would link me
to Muslim rebels. It really crossed my mind after hearing the President,
that they would demolish me and use it as an issue against me. Na ako yung
isa sa 50 officials (aiding Moro rebels)," Araneta said.
"If they would give me that notoriety, fine with me. It would not stick
anyway because it's not true," she said.
