March 6, 1978, Eugene Register-Guard - AP, Benny Niece Suit Alleges 'Brainwash',

PORTLAND (AP) -- The niece of the late comedian Jack Benny has filed a &1 million damage suit claiming deprogrammers attempted to brainwash her into renouncing the Church of Scientology.

Jessica Marks, 26, claimed in the Multnomash County Circuit Court suit that she was forcibly imprisioned and restrained against her will "for the malicious purpose of interfering with religious beliefs."

Her attorney, Charles Paulson of Portland, said Marks was tricked into meeting a friend at a Beaverton home June 5, 1976, where the attempted deprogramming allegedly occurred.

"It has taken me 1½ years since the ordeal for me to be able to stand up to these people and stop them in some way," Ms. Marks siad. "They're trying to take away people's religious freedom."

The suit, filed Friday, lists 13 defendants, including Ted Patrick, who operates Ted Patrick and Associates in San Diego, two of his employees and Salem lawyer Peter Rudie.

Rudie said he was surprised by the lawsuit. He described the deprogramming attempt as a two-hour conversation arounf the dinner table in the Beaverton home and he denied that Marks was detained against her will.

He said Patrick was not involved in the conversation and was not in Portland at the time.

Marks' suit claims she was "placed in apprehension of physical harm and death and was thereby caused to submit against her will to the imprisionment and to attempted brainwashing by defendents who were attempting to interfere with the plaintiff's religious beliefs in the Church of Scientology..."
