An Account of the Last Murder in the Mormon Country, &c.
While we are blessed with promising meadows and the richest grain-fields, we are not wanting in mental excitement, the raw material for which our Mormon neighbors furnish us, in the result of their spiritual wife system, petty larcenies, horse stealing, robberies;, murders and assassinations. Our jail has been for a long time almost literally filled with Mormon preachers and Mormon "mints" And this is the fact, too, although ours is not a Mormon county.
You will remember that a most horrible murder was committed in Lee County, Iowa, some time ago, by persons at that time unknown. Suspicions rested upon two Mormons, in Nauvoo, by the name of Hodges. They were arrested, carried to Burlington, in Iowa: tried, found guilty on the 21st ult.. and condemned to be hung on the 15th instant But during the progress of the trial, facts were developed, which rendered it certain that a third brother, a citizen of the city of the holy Joe, was particeps criminis. He was taken in Nauvoo on the 23d ult|, and while in custody he was called to the door bt some one, who pretended that, he wished to speak to Hodges for a few moments in private. He was immediately stabbed, and died in a very short time. Upon being asked if he knew who it was that inflicted the fatal wound, he replied, "Yes, it was my best friend." It is believed that he was one of "the Danite band" of Mormons, who had been sent to Iowa to commit the murder for which he was arrested; that being arrested, he told his confederates that he would turn States' evidence, it they did not relieve him; and that he than became the victim of a conspiracy among his associates in crime, who thus certainly, and in a summary manner, put him out of the way, to prevent him from attempting to save himself, by exposing, the robbers and murderers who live in and about Nauvoo.
It is scarcely possible to exaggerate in saying all of these Mormons, known, as they are, to have violated every command of the decalogue.
Hancock county has again been the scene of the most intense excitement, growing out of the fact of Dr. Marshall, an old and esteemed citizen, having been killed on the 24th ult, by Gen Deming, the sheriff of that county, and long regarded by many as being in the Mormon interest. Dr. Marshall was an anti-Mormon. The circumstances which led to this affair are about these:—Dr. Marshall had purchased a tract of land at a tax sale. The land was subsequently found to have been sold in error. Dr. Marshall, with a view, to getting his money back, requested the Sheriff to mark the sale as having been made in error. This the Sheriff, having perhaps forgotten, did not do : and Dr. Marshall, who was a man remarkable for his accuracy, and particularly in the transaction of business upon learning that his request had not been attended to,
said something, which highly exasperated the Sheriff. A scuffle ensued, Deming drew his pistol,
and fired upon Dr. Marshall, the ball entering a little below the navel. Marshall, upon being asked if he
was hurt, answered "I will very soon be a dead man" He died in about five minutes. Deming did not attempt to escape,, but said, with great emotion, to Mr. Backenstos, " this is what I have expected." He was arrested by the Coroner. The Grand Jury found a bill against him, next morning, for murder. He was admitted to bail in $5000 bonds.
The indictments against the persons charged with the murder of Hyram Smith, have been dismissed for want of prosecution.
I regret to see that the people of the United States, influenced, perhaps, in their opinions by the press, think that we have no cause to apprehend danger of war with England. To my mind, war seems to be inevitable in less than two years. Thousands of hardy, enterprising men in the valley-of the Mississippi and Missouri, are resolved upon going to the West, which I have at last found to be situated between Point Adams, and Cape Disappointment. Lon. 123 deg. 54 min., VVest, lat. 46 deg. 19 min. North. And this disposition to go to the west, will not permit a British shadow of title to interfere with their plans. It will have Oregon. This will involve us in war in less than two years.

William Hickman, one of Brigham Young's old Danite band of persecutors and murderers, lay in a recanting and confessional state of mind. While attending a horse-race over in Nevada, recently, he was taken sick, and being charged with murders innumerable, said he had never killed anybody on his own account, but only for Brigham Young and the church's sake. On a rough calculation he thought he had committed about four hundred murders on their account.
